Wisdom teeth are the last to erupt, so there's often a lack of space. This can cause the teeth to become impacted (under the gums) or stuck against another tooth, which can lead to pain, swelling, and TMJ pain.

In modern dentistry, wisdom tooth extraction is routinely performed in a dental office. In very specific cases, it can be performed in a hospital setting.
