Distraction Osteogenesis
The so-called distraction osteogenesis uses devices fixed directly to the jaw bones and has brought a simple and conservative alternative to resolving facial growth changes in those patients who, for numerous etiologies, cause disproportionate relationships in the facial bones.
How is it done? Delicate devices are placed inside or outside the mouth to make corrections to discrepancies in bone size.
When bones are subjected to traction guided by orthopedic devices in certain directions and with adequate load, they are capable of growing. Thus, a small bone could reach a size considered normal in relation to others, especially in patients with syndromes.
